Some of us may experience extreme and intense pain on one part of the face, which can come and go suddenly. This is known as Trigeminal Neuralgia. This occurs due to a problem faced by the trigeminal nerves in the brain. There are 3 branches of the trigeminal nerves, these are supplied to the forehead, in between the eyes and the mouth, and the jaw. The pain can occur only in one of the branches or maybe in all the 3 branches. People experience the pain during having food, while having something cold such as an ice cream, if the wind of the fan hits their face, or when they just laugh. This comes suddenly like a shooting pain, which either gradually or slowly goes away. To confirm whether this is trigeminal neuralgia, an MRI scan must be done. This can be treated through medicines or by injecting absolute alcohol directly into the nerve. If neither of these work the next option is surgery - Microvascular Decompression. This is a key-hole surgery. Trigeminal Neuralgia can be detected easily and even though it is extremely painful it is never life threatening.
