See our books here: https://shop.paginadenursing.ro Breathing measurement can be an indication for establishing a diagnosis, monitoring the evolution of the disease, preventing or identifying complications, but also the prognosis of the disease. Breathing is the body's function through which the oxygen supply necessary for vital processes is provided, in parallel with the elimination of carbon dioxide. Normal breathing, or eupnea, occurs effortlessly, silently, with symmetrical, rhythmic, barely visible chest movements. Normal breathing, or eupnea, occurs effortlessly, silently, with symmetrical, rhythmic, barely visible chest movements. Breathing Measurement – Purpose Evaluation of respiratory function; Monitoring the effects of disease, trauma or stress on the respiratory system; Recognizing complications; Assessing the evolution of the disease; Prognosis of the disease; Evaluating the patient's response to medication or treatments that affect the respiratory system. Normal values breaths/minute Respiratory frequency varies depending on age, sex, position, ambient temperature, state of wakefulness or sleep, physical exertion. The average normal respiratory rate for an adult is 16-18 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a newborn is 30-50 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a 6-month-old is 25-40 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a 2-year-old is 25-35 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a 6-year-old is 18-25 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a 10-year-old is 17-23 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a woman is 16-20 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for a man is 14-18 breaths per minute. The average respiratory rate for an elderly person (≥ 65 years) is 12-28 breaths per minute. The number of breaths in an elderly person (≥ 80 years) is 10-30 breaths per minute. Types of breathing Upper costal breathing – found in women by raising the upper part of the rib cage Lower costal breathing – found in men by increasing the lateral diameter of the rib cage Abdominal breathing – by increasing the vertical diameter of the rib cage, found in children and the elderly. Breathing measurement site Surface of the chest Patient preparation for breathing measurement IMPORTANT: The patient is not notified when the breathing measurement technique is performed because the patient can influence the number of breaths and thus a modified result will be obtained. Required materials To measure breathing we need: A watch with a second hand, a wristwatch or a stopwatch; Green/blue pen; Temperature sheet. Technique Technique for measuring breathing: The patient's position is supine; It can also be performed while the patient is sleeping; The nurse places the palm of her hand on the surface of the chest; The inspirations are measured for 1 minute. Another option is to measure for 30 seconds and multiply by 2. We can count respiratory movements without placing our hand on the surface of the chest, only by observing the movements of the rib cage. Avoid measuring breathing in an infant or child while they are crying.
