Biggest Armies in History: Data from 1900 to 2026

This dataset tracks the size of national armed forces from 1900 to 2026, measured by active military personnel under direct government command and maintained in combat readiness. Reserve forces not mobilized for active service, colonial troops, paramilitary formations, frontier guards, gendarmerie units, and civil defense organizations are excluded from the assessment. Countries are grouped into major regional blocs: Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the rest of the world, highlighting the long-term shift in global military concentration across different eras, conflicts, and geopolitical systems. The analysis is based on NMC (CINC) historical datasets together with official state military reports and archival estimates. Your feedback is always welcome. Got topic suggestions?
