Shorter slopes, a desire to ski "on the edge," the need for speed control, and quick transitions from turn to turn make slalom skis a ton of fun. The problem? They're not very versatile and only really "like" specific conditions: well-groomed, hard-packed slopes. In this episode, we break down the topic and answer the question: which skis should you choose instead of slalom skis if you still want dynamic, short, carved turns – but with more versatility (and often less fatigue). Tomek Kurdziel's guest is Jacek Mieszczak – owner of the Ski Race Center store, a former competitor, and an excellent skier who knows slalom skiing inside and out. In the video, we show three specific options (alternatives to slalom skis): 1) Narrow, flexible skis with a slalom "soul" (all-round performance) If you want to maintain a fast edge-to-edge transition, but gain tolerance and better performance in less favorable conditions. 2) Cross turns – sporty hybrids for intermediate turns They offer edge feel close to slalom skiing, but allow for more comfortable skiing with a longer radius and "travel" down the slope without constant struggle. 3) Skis with a small radius, but wider (better in soft and broken snow) If you enjoy short turns and usually run out of fun by 1 p.m. because it gets wet and slushy, this might be the course that will add a few hours of skiing to your day.
