Understanding Dr. Eric Williams: The Caribbean Godfather
Williams was born on September 25, 1911, to Thomas Henry Williams, a minor civil servant, and Eliza Frances Boissiere, who was part of the mixed French Creole elite. He received his education at Tranquility Boys' Intermediate Government School and Queen's Royal College in Port of Spain, where he excelled and won an island scholarship in 1932 to St Catherine's College, Oxford. He completed his B.A. in history in 1935 and obtained his doctorate in 1938. The Hon. Dr. Eric Eustace Williams, who became Trinidad and Tobago's first Prime Minister, established the People's National Movement (PNM) on January 15, 1956, which played a crucial role in the country's journey to independence in 1962 and influenced its post-colonial political framework. He served as prime minister until 1981.
