The Leopard 2K began after the US-German MBT/KPz-70 program failed in 1970, as an urgent replacement for the aging Leopard 1. Previous modernization and development efforts, such as the 1967 "vergoldeter Leopard" (Gold-plated Leopard) program, aimed at installing a coaxial autoloader and autocannon on the Leopard 1, had been underway. The Bundeswehr decided to reuse parts of these developments in a series of vehicles dubbed "Keiler," or "ivory." This resulted in two separate vehicles being prototyped and tested: the Leopard 2FK, armed with a launcher/gun system similar to the KPz-70, and the Leopard 2K, armed with a 105 mm smoothbore gun. The Bundeswehr declared the 2K to be the superior design in 1971, and development of the 2FK was halted as a result. Sixteen Leopard 2K prototypes were produced (the 17th was cancelled), the first ten equipped with a 105 mm smoothbore gun and the next six with a 120 mm smoothbore gun. These prototypes underwent technical testing between 1972 and 1975, but were ultimately shelved due to the development of the EMES-13 remote-stop system and the requirement of an MLC of 50 (approximately 47.5 tonnes), which was insufficient to provide adequate protection against enemy tank fire. Unfortunately for the Leopard 2K, lessons learned during the Yom Kippur War in 1973 alerted the Bundeswehr to the fact that armor was still very relevant in tank combat, leading to a relaxation of the weight restriction to MLC 60 (55 tonnes).
