Growing Hardy Kiwi in a Cold Climate

Just last winter we hit -13 so even though hardiness zones are based on average winter minimums they can miss the extremes. As a general rule we like the majority of our plants to be hardy down to zone 4 but we have no problem in trying plants less hardy. Hardy kiwi, which produces a small fruit, tastes similar to a kiwi fruit. The plants are plenty hardy for our climate. The challenge is getting the fruit to maturity. We have a short growing season that varies between 90-120 days. Hardy kiwi generally takes a long time for fruit to mature. The challenge in our short growing season will be to get the fruit close enough to ripe before frost comes so that we can harvest and finish ripening indoors. Hardy Kiwi has male and female plants (for most hardy kiwi). Ensure you get at least one male for up to 8 female plants if you ever want fruit! This is our first go at hardy kiwi (3 years in) and we will see how the experiment progresses.
