Gaddafi Celebrating 40th Anniversary of Al Fateh Revolution | Libyan Arab Jamahiriya | Sept. 2009

Tuesday, September 1st 2009. Footage of Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Al Fateh Revolution; his seizure of power from King Idris in 1969. Gaddafi went on to establish the Libyan Revolutionary Command Council (R.C.C.) which abolished the monarchy and established the Libyan Arab Republic, which had the motto "freedom, socialism and unity". The celebrations in Tripoli were attended by African, Arab and Latin American leaders including President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, but it was largely ignored by Western governments. He was murdered in October 2011 by Islamist insurgents who, backed by NATO forces, succeeded in overthrowing his government, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Source of Footage: AFPTV via Getty Images.
