It is a quick and simple way of shortening or removing slack in a rope, will hold under tension and does not jam. Once that tension is released, the knot will fall apart which can be a disadvantage. It can even be used to shorten rope which is damaged, however the damaged portion of the rope must be passed through the half hitches. Start by creating three identical loops. Overlap the loops. Then pull the center loops through the outer loops.
