SELBY PARISH #67: KELFIELD The last parish to cover in the North East of Selby is Kelfield, a small village situated on the northern bank of the River Ouse, approximately 5 miles Northwest of Selby itself. Kelfield is dominated by agriculture, its surrounding farmland being very fertile. It’s become a sought after village to reside in over the years too and boasts barn conversions and holiday cottages Unlike some of the other places close by Kelfield is much less of a village and more of a hamlet. To the untrained eye there’s practically nothing here…but dig deep and you will find things! Kelfield is recorded in the Domesday Book as “Chelchefelt”. There are only three Kelfield’s in the world. There’s one in Lincolnshire, and the other is in Saskatchewan, Canada The Yorkshire version used to be a township within Stillingfleet parish. It once had a plethora of occupations including two carpenters – one of whom was a gunsmith Its population has hardly changed since the 1871 census, though the number of dwellings have more than doubled in the same period. This is the village which lies on the other side of the swing bridge at Cawood.
