Al Jarreau & Steve Gadd - Full Concert [HD] | Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 1994 Date & location: SUNDAY 10 JULY 1994 • STATENHAL • Congress Centre, The Hague, The Netherlands Alwyn Lopez "Al" Jarreau (March 12, 1940 – February 12, 2017) was an American jazz and pop singer. Al Jarreau was known for his improvised scat singing and his ability to mimic musical instruments with his voice, including guitar and percussion. He is the only singer to have won Grammy Awards in three categories: jazz, R&B, and pop. As the son of a preacher, he got his first singing experience in the church choir. He first studied psychology at Ripon College, where he performed in the evenings with a singing group called "The Indigos". In 1962 he graduated, and went on to study "Vocational Rehabilitation" at the University of Iowa. After this he worked as a social worker, but later decided to become a professional singer. In California he performed with a jazz trio, led by George Duke, in small clubs. His first album was released in 1965. In the late sixties he made a few TV appearances, including with Johnny Carson. In 1975 he was discovered by a talent scout from Warner Brothers. That same year the album We Got By was released. The album was well received by critics and gave him international fame. Glow from 1976, his second album, also did well. Al Jarreau only really broke through with his third album, Look to the Rainbow from 1977, which includes a performance of "Take Five". Breakin' Away (1981) is his best-selling album. This album contains the hit "Roof Garden" and the song "We're in This Love Together". Al Jarreau also sang and composed the theme of the popular American television series "Moonlighting" and was heard on "We Are the World" as part of USA for Africa. In 1996 he played the role of Teen Angel in a Broadway version of Grease. In 2001 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Al Jarreau was a regular guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2007, Al Jarreau recorded the album "Givin it up" with George Benson. Paul McCartney also sang on two songs on this album. Together, Al Jarreau and George Benson made a world tour in 2008 and also visited Asia (including Bangkok in Thailand). On 22 July 2010, he became unwell during his tour of Japan and Europe. In Gap, France, he was admitted to a hospital with breathing difficulties and the next day his situation was critical. After the then 70-year-old was transferred to a hospital in Marseille, his condition improved, which was attributed to over-fatigue. He developed lung problems and heart problems and started to take it easy. In early February 2017, it was announced that Jarreau wanted to retire for health reasons. He was admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles with symptoms of exhaustion. Al Jarreau died a few days later at the age of 76. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
