These polyps can be broadly classified into two main types: non-neoplastic and neoplastic. Non-neoplastic polyps include hyperplastic polyps, inflammatory polyps, and hamartomatous polyps, which are typically benign and do not have a significant risk of malignant transformation. Neoplastic polyps, on the other hand, include adenomatous polyps and serrated polyps, which have the potential to progress to colorectal cancer through the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. The development of GI polyps is often multifactorial and can be influenced by factors such as age, genetics, diet, and inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. Patients with GI polyps may remain asymptomatic, or they may present with symptoms such as rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or obstruction depending on the size, location, and histological characteristics of the polyps. Diagnosis is typically made through screening colonoscopy, which allows for direct visualization and biopsy of the polyps. Treatment of GI polyps depends on their histology, size, number, and location. Small, non-neoplastic polyps may be removed during colonoscopy using techniques such as polypectomy or cold snare polypectomy, while larger or neoplastic polyps may require more extensive resection or surveillance protocols to monitor for recurrence or malignant transformation.
