Ladies and Gentlemen, Today, I want to talk about a subject that directly affects the daily lives of Cameroonians: the railway. When we look at the state of our trains in 2026, one question is inescapable: what have we actually gained after 43 years of power under Paul Biya? Just look at the inside of some of the train cars. Worn seats. Outdated equipment. Cars that are often dirty. A lack of maintenance that's plain to see. Sometimes, it's hard to believe that this is the mode of transport for a country with so much natural wealth. While some African countries are investing in modern, fast, air-conditioned, and comfortable trains, many Cameroonians continue to travel in conditions reminiscent of decades past. But the problem doesn't end with the appearance of the trains. The most striking symbol of this failure remains the Eséka train disaster of October 21, 2016. This tragedy claimed 79 lives and injured more than 550. This disaster exposed the weaknesses of the Cameroonian railway system: safety issues, inadequate maintenance, and management failures. Beyond Eséka, the railway network itself has gradually deteriorated. Lines have disappeared. Sections have been closed. Instead of developing the national network, several railway lines have been abandoned. The number of passengers transported has decreased sharply over the years. Even freight transport has declined significantly. How can it be explained that after more than four decades in power, Cameroon still lacks a modern railway network capable of efficiently connecting all its major cities? How can it be explained that a country that produces oil, timber, cocoa, coffee, gold, and other strategic resources continues to have such a limited railway network? Cameroonians are not asking for luxury. They simply want safe trains. Clean trains. Comfortable trains. Modern trains. They want a transportation system worthy of Cameroon's potential. After 43 years of governance, many citizens believe this is no longer simply a delay, but a genuine failure of vision and governance. Because when a country moves forward, its infrastructure moves forward with it. When a country progresses, its trains also progress. The real question, therefore, is this: After 43 years in power, does the Cameroonian railway network reflect progress or failure? It's up to you to decide.
