All citrus fruits are native to India and the Far East, areas with tropical and subtropical climates. They were introduced to the Mediterranean by the Arabs and Romans, initially in the warmer regions of the Mediterranean, where they found similar environmental conditions to their countries of origin, and where it was therefore possible to cultivate them in open fields (for example, in Sicily). In Italy, citrus fruits perform best, both in terms of vegetative vigor and fruit production, in the Mediterranean scrub area, characterized by mild winters and hot, dry summers. The citrus fruits that will struggle will be those outside the Mediterranean scrub area, which are most exposed to frost. I'm Pietro Giusti, an agronomist and scholar of local and exotic flora.
