Gorilla Doctors: Celebrating 40 Years

Today, on Earth Day, we launch a celebration of 40 years of Gorilla Doctors — 40 years of keeping eastern gorillas healthy and wild. In 1986, an American veterinarian arrived in Rwanda with a radical goal: save every gorilla life he could by treating them in their forest home while surrounded by their gorilla family. And the veterinarians who followed never stopped treating one snare, illness, or injury at a time. It worked. Today, mountain gorilla numbers have nearly doubled and and Gorilla Doctors' frontline work has been vital to their recovery. As mountain gorilla numbers have increased, Gorilla Doctors has grown with them. Today we are a team of Rwandan, Ugandan, Congolese, and American veterinarians, scientists, and conservation professionals — united by the belief that the health of gorillas, people, and our planet are inseparable. Thank you for helping make all of this possible. Join us for the next 40. www.gorilladoctors.org
