At all times of the year, locals and visitors gather here at the gilded statue of the Virgin Mary (Mariensäule) to celebrate the victories of sports teams, to feel the magic of Christmas All roads lead to the brilliant buildings around the square, where the imposing New Town Hall or Neues Rathaus stands out. A little further down, we find the Viktualienmarkt, an open-air market offering fresh produce, local delicacies, flowers and traditional Bavarian snacks. Karlsplatz, better known as Stachus, is formed by the Karlstor Gate with a semicircle of buildings and the nearby Courthouse. It serves as the entrance to Munich's largest pedestrian zone. OdeonsPlatz, an Italian-style square that lends itself to an unforgettable dolce vita. The Theatinerkirche of St. Cajetan is a Roman Catholic church that is very reminiscent of Italy, and the Feldherrnhalle Generals' Hall resembles the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. We have arrived at the Residenz Palace, the royal residence of the Bavarian monarchs, with ornate halls, a treasury and the Hofgarten garden. Maximillianstrasse is an elegant boulevard with galleries, museums and monuments that leads to the Maximilianeum building, which houses the Bavarian parliament. We encounter the Isar River, an ideal place for a walk and relaxation in Munich. On an island in the river is built the Deutsches Museum, the German Museum of Science and Technology Masterpieces, a traditional museum and a modern, interactive installation, the largest in the world. Königsplatz Square combines ancient Greek architecture with European classicism. Impressive museums, such as the Glyptotheque, the State Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Lenbachhaus with works of modern painting and the Egyptian Museum. At a distance of 7 km there is a baroque palace with vast gardens and elegant pavilions. It is the palace of the nymphs or Nymphenburg, the summer residence of the Bavarian rulers A modern symbol of Munich is the Allianz Arena, the 75,000-capacity football stadium that hosts FC Bayern Munich. Tours of the stadium and museum attract fans all year round. Olympiapark was built for the 1972 Olympic Games. The Olympic Stadium and the 290-meter-high Olympic Tower stand out. The history and iconic models of BMW are hosted in the eponymous museum next to the company's skyscraper. Munich's Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in the world. It was first held in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese and has now become one of the top events in Munich. The fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle was the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle and is one of the most popular attractions in Germany. Linderhof Castle is an equally interesting idea for an excursion, as is the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.
