This stance emerged after the Malaysian government asked a dual US-Israeli citizen to leave its territory. This decision prompted the United States Department of State to summon the Malaysian Ambassador to the US, Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, on Friday (July 24, 2026). The summons was issued to demand an explanation regarding Malaysia's policy towards Israeli citizens. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated that the policy was not a new rule. According to him, Malaysia has long not recognized Israel in its immigration policy. "That has always been Malaysia's policy. Our immigration policy does not recognize the State of Israel or the Zionist regime. This has been our long-standing position," said Mohamad Hasan. The case began when a citizen entered Malaysia using a United States passport. However, after investigation, immigration authorities discovered that the individual also held Israeli citizenship. The Malaysian government then asked the individual to leave its territory due to its policy of not recognizing Israeli citizenship. Mohamad Hasan emphasized that the decision was not based on his status as a US citizen. Rather, he was an Israeli citizen. "There is an individual with dual US and Israeli citizenship who entered Malaysia using a US passport. After further investigation, it was discovered that he is also an Israeli citizen, so we asked him to leave," said Mohamad Hasan. The issue then escalated into a diplomatic issue. Eight members of the US Congress sent a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding Malaysia's policy. They asked the US government to review its security ties and economic cooperation with Malaysia.
