Many homeowners don’t realise their homes are under constant threat from foraging termites until damage has already occurred. This is because termites operate in a concealed subterranean environment, rarely venturing into the open. Homes throughout South East Queensland are particularly vulnerable. Termites are commonly found nesting in gum trees, tree stumps, retaining walls, and embedded timbers across most backyards. From these nests, termites build an extensive network of underground tunnels — often just below the soil surface - as they search for timber. As termites forage, workers break timber down into digestible material and transport it back to the nest to feed the colony. To termites, a home represents an ideal food source - concealed, abundant, and easily accessible if left unprotected. During inspections, we often find termites travelling beneath pavers, concrete paths, and driveways. They typically tunnel horizontally through the soil until they reach the slab edge or footings of a house, then move along the structure searching for a concealed entry point. These entry points are often small gaps in mortar joints below ground level, slab edges, or weep holes. In subfloor areas, where conditions are dark and undisturbed, termite activity can be particularly extensive. To prevent this type of infestation, we strongly recommend installing a continuous chemical treatment around the base of the home.
