100 Miles Downriver With One Rule: Fish the Deepest Holes
I took my boat 100 miles down the Neuse River during an extreme drought to see if it was even possible to make the trip — and to find out what kind of catfish were living in the deepest holes along the way. We launched at Whitetail Landing in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and traveled down the Neuse River 100 miles one way. The river was the lowest I have ever seen it. With eastern North Carolina dealing with extreme drought conditions, the Neuse River was extremely shallow, full of sandbars, skinny water, exposed structure, and areas that were almost too low to run by boat. For this trip, I had one main fishing rule: fish the deepest holes I could find. I wanted to see if the catfish were stacked up in the deeper water during these low-water conditions. Along the way, I searched for deep holes, current breaks, outside bends, ledges, and any area that looked like it could hold blue catfish, flathead catfish, or channel catfish. This was more than just a catfishing trip. It was a true river adventure. I put the SeaArk FlatKat to the test in some of the shallowest water I have ever tried to run. The trip was full of suspense, long shallow stretches, tough navigation, and moments where I wasn’t sure if we were going to make it. Toward the end of the trip, we even ran out of gas and had to troll the last few miles. After traveling 100 miles downriver and fishing the deepest holes I could find, the day ended with an awesome surprise. In the final spot, I managed to catch 3 nice catfish, making the entire adventure worth it.
