A weeping rose is a climbing rose grafted onto a stem at least 1.40 meters tall. There are two graft points on such a rose: the first, at the bottom, is the stem on the rootstock, and the second is the climbing rose on the top of the stem. The best-known weeping rose variety is the 'Excelsa' standard rose, a non-repeat variety. • Planting a weeping rose To plant a standard climbing rose in a lawn, the first step is to prepare the area of lawn where the rose will be planted. This one-meter-wide area may seem large, but you need to allow enough space to maneuver the lawn around the future weeping rose bush without catching on the shrub's claws. 1. Use an edger to mark out the lawn area with a diameter of 1 meter. 2. Remove the layer of turf with a spade. 3. Dig a hole about 30 cm deep, or about the height of a spade blade. 4. Add compost to the bottom of the hole and mix it with the garden soil to avoid burning the roots. 5. Don't hesitate to break up clods to make the soil fine enough. If your soil is very clayey, add potting soil to loosen it. 6. Install a stake. When planting a tree or shrub, it is always preferable to install the stake at this stage of planting rather than once the tree is firmly established. 7. Apply special organic rose fertilizer to encourage the young rose bush to restart growth. 8. Remove the rose bush from its pot. 9. Position the rose bush so that the root/stem graft union is above ground level. 10. Stake the weeping rose bush. 11. To fill the planting hole, use the garden soil collected at the beginning of planting, adding potting soil to make it more permeable. 12. Firm the area, form a hollow, and water thoroughly to avoid air pockets. Note: An umbrella stake could also have been installed during planting. This type of stake is specially designed for weeping roses to evenly distribute the branches and create a more harmonious appearance.
