Riva Trigoso

Riva Trigoso is a beautiful tourist resort on the eastern Ligurian Riviera, located not far from Sestri Levante. The bay is divided in two by the Petronio stream, and it is said that there is a strong rivalry between the inhabitants of the two areas. To the west, you can admire Punta Manara, beyond which lies Sestri Levante, while to the east, beyond the Asseu rock, the characteristic tunnels leading to Moneglia begin. It's impossible to talk about Riva Trigoso without mentioning its shipyards, founded in 1897 and among the oldest in Italy. Important ships have been built here, many for the Italian Navy, including the 2004 aircraft carrier Cavour, whose launch made history as the last one to be performed using the traditional method of sliding into the water. The local specialty is Bagnun, a seafood soup made with anchovies, garlic, oil, tomatoes, and toasted bread instead of sailors' biscuits, reminiscent of the one-course meal local sailors ate aboard their leudi. The Bagnun festival, one of the oldest in Liguria, takes place in July. During the festival, founded in 1960, on the evening of the third Saturday in July, the dish is prepared in large quantities on a characteristic set of enormous stoves and distributed free to tourists. And now the legend about the origins of the name Riva Trigoso and the Asseu rock. The young Riva, with her blond braids, and the handsome Trigoso loved each other and one day decided to marry, but on their wedding day, during the celebrations, their village was invaded by Saracen pirates. Trying to defend his betrothed, Trigoso bravely charged the pirates and, in the fight, while Riva was being forcibly loaded onto the enemy vessel, he was knocked unconscious. Awakening a few seconds later, he screamed at the sight of his beloved in the distance, but was immediately pierced by the enemy's arrows. Riva witnessed the scene from the ship and, seeing her betrothed dying, threw herself at the captain, who stabbed her to death. The pirates then threw her body into the sea. The water ran red with the blood of Riva and Trigoso, and a gigantic wave struck and tore the pirate ship to pieces, destroying several chests and trunks containing gold and precious items. The following night, angels descended from the sky and placed a large bell-shaped rock (now the Asseu Rock, and it's the one behind me) on the spot where Riva had died. The treasure was never found, and for this reason the bay was nicknamed the Bay of Gold.
