A DIABETIC Ulcer is a common complication in people with diabetes, especially on the feet (diabetic foot ulcer). It happens because HIGH BLOOD SUGAR damages nerves and blood vessels, reducing sensation and slowing healing. 🔹 Causes NEUROPATHY (nerve damage): Loss of pain sensation → small cuts or blisters go unnoticed. Poor circulation: Less blood flow → slower healing. High blood sugar: Weakens immune system and delays wound repair. Infections: Make ulcers worse and harder to treat. 🔹 Common Sites Bottom of the foot (sole) Toes and heel Sometimes legs 🔹 Symptoms Wound that doesn’t heal for weeks Swelling, redness, or warmth around wound Drainage or pus (yellow/green fluid) Foul odor Black tissue (dead skin → gangrene risk) 🔹 Treatment ✅ Medical Care (most important): Blood sugar control (insulin/tablets, diet, exercise). Wound cleaning and dressing (sterile bandages). ANTIBIOTICS if infected. Debridement (removal of dead tissue). Special FOOTWEAR/offloading devices to reduce pressure. ✅ Self-Care at Home (with doctor’s guidance): Wash wound gently with mild antiseptic or saline. Keep dressing clean and dry. Wear soft, protective shoes or sandals. Inspect feet daily for cuts or BLISTERS. Avoid walking barefoot. 🔹 Prevention Maintain HEALTHY blood sugar levels. Daily foot inspection. Proper footwear. Moisturize feet (but not between toes).
