Warm, indulgent, vanilla-ed… It’s hard to find the right adjectives to describe the tonka bean, one of the most precious natural ingredients used in luxury perfumery. This intoxicating seed is found in the fruit produced by cumaru, a tropical tree that is native to South America. Coumarin, the natural extract of the tonka bean, has long been replaced by a synthetic ingredient in the production of most perfumes. But today, there is renewed interest in its cultivation. In Venezuela, perfumers with a concern for quality and NGOs involved in sustainable development are breathing new life into the traditional gathering of coumarin in forests, with the dual aim of protecting this precious terroir and of generating an equitable income for local populations.
