A high school student studying in Nagoya has been selected to represent Japan at the Asian Games. The school visited is Chukyo University Affiliated Chukyo High School in Showa Ward, Nagoya City. It's a prestigious sports school with many clubs, including baseball, soccer, and track and field, competing in national tournaments. The student participating in the Asian Games is Chen Yi-hsien (16), a first-year student from Taiwan and a member of the track and field club. Chen placed second in the women's 400m at the U20 Asian Athletics Championships this past May, securing her place as Taiwan's representative in the women's 400m at the Asian Games. What are her classmates' impressions of her? Chen arrived in Japan in November 2025. She hasn't even been learning Japanese for a year yet, but she attends classes and speaks almost entirely in Japanese during her school days. (Classmate) Q. What kind of person is Chen? "During class and breaks, she's so laid-back and cute." (Classmate) Q. How do you feel about having a classmate who's competing in the Asian Games? "I'm proud to be her classmate." Why did you come to Chukyo University Chukyo High School from Taiwan? The history between Chukyo University Chukyo High School and Taiwan dates back 95 years. At that time, Taiwan, under Japanese rule, participated in the Summer Koshien baseball tournament. In the final match, Chukyo University Chukyo High School (then Chukyo Commercial School) faced a Taiwanese high school. Afterward, the Pacific War began and exchanges with Taiwan ceased, but in the 1960s, Taiwanese track and field athletes began studying at Chukyo University, and exchanges resumed. A plan to train Chen in Japan emerged between Taiwanese track and field officials and coaches at Chukyo University Chukyo High School, leading to this study abroad program. (Chen Yi-hsien) Q. What made you want to study in Japan? "I want to get stronger. I was also interested in training in Japan. (After actually training in Japan) It's tough, but fun."
