Steve's journey through esophageal cancer and remaining hopeful
Four weeks after a vacation with his family, photographer Steve started to have trouble swallowing and knew something was abnormal. After meeting with gastroenterologist, Richard L. Fried, MD, he scheduled an endoscopy which revealed a malignant tumor in his esophagus. From there, he continued his cancer treatment with Marisa Siebel, MD, regional director of gastrointestinal malignancies, eastern region, Northwell Cancer Institute and chief of hematology oncology at Huntington Hospital. After further scans revealed that Steve's cancer had spread to his bones, Dr. Siebel quickly changed his treatment plan to chemotherapy. Each subsequent scan throughout his treatment showed shrinking of his tumor and less evidence of disease in his bones. Until Dr. Siebel saw there was no evidence of disease, Steve was labeled in remission. "If you know Dr. Siebel, she is very cautious and very selective about her words with her words and what she says and tells you, and one of the first things she said to me when she came in that day was, 'you're a miracle man.'" said Steve.
