De Steam Machine: Steamy hot or not?

In this video, we take a look at Valve's new piece of hardware: the Steam Machine. On Tuesday evening, the price of the mini PC (see GK Daily) was announced. And it was steep, to put it mildly. Valve has the ambition to bring the power and flexibility of PC gaming to the living room in a device that works just as simply as a console. We consider that an extraordinarily noble endeavor. Something that many of us would also like to own. But the overall plan has to be right. And does it still hold up with a starting price of 1,030 euros? Boris and Koos have a clear opinion on the matter. They looked at the first tech reviews of the Steam Machine, compared it to the performance of the competition, and came to a conclusion. And they share it in this video. Is 1,030 euros for a Steam Machine (much) too much? The new Steam Machine (the first one was released in 2015 and did not perform well) features a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with 6 cores and 12 threads, an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, 16 GB of DDR5 memory, and storage options of 512 GB or 2 TB. According to Valve, the system delivers performance more than six times higher than that of the Steam Deck and is designed for gaming at 1440p to 4K using FSR upscaling. Additionally, the device runs on SteamOS, giving users direct access to their Steam library. How does the Steam Machine compare to the PS5 (Pro) and Xbox Series X? The Steam Machine is available in four configurations. The entry-level model with 512 GB of storage costs €1,039. The bundle with the Steam Controller costs €1,108. The 2 TB version costs €1,359, and the top model with 2 TB of storage plus Steam Controller has a price tag of €1,428. Furthermore, the more expensive 2 TB models come with extra interchangeable faceplates. These are hefty prices for a system that positions itself between a console and a gaming PC. This immediately raises the central question of this video: does the Steam Machine offer sufficient performance and ease of use to justify this investment?
