Understanding Cellular Biology across multiple scales using machine learning ---- This Seminar was recorded on 1 February 2024; Dr Lotfollahi is hosted by Prof Andres Floto from CCAIM. ---- Abstract Machine learning and artificial intelligence have significantly transformed the landscape of Biology and Medicine. This talk will navigate through the intersection of cellular biology and machine learning, AI, where ground-breaking applications have the potential to reshape the field of precision medicine. The challenges we seek to solve are diverse and encompass broad ranges. For instance, we explore methods to identify novel disease cell states and disentangle technical and biological variations when analysing datasets across thousands of patients with high-resolution molecular data. We also investigate how machine learning can predict a cell's response to drug or CRISPR perturbations and how modelling cellular communication aids in understanding tissue changes during disease. These fundamental questions are pivotal, as answering them could advance personalized medicine across diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, and cell engineering. About the speaker Mo Lotfollahi is the director of machine learning research at Relation Therapeutics, a scientist at Helmholtz Munich, and also incoming faculty at Wellcome Sanger Institute. His research focuses on developing AI/ML algorithms for biomedical data, with a specific emphasis on single-cell technologies for diagnostics, therapeutics, and drug discovery.
