The LOST fountains of Harrisburg

Part two of this series searching for the lost fountains of Harrisburg Pennsylvania. The Eby Fountain and Donato's Dance of Eternal Spring that he originally created for Milton Hershey. Snyder born to 10/29/1972 (aka Madeline Stokes, Amanda Straw) 1892: Pharmacist George C. Potts opens drug store at 1101 North Third St, opposite the site of the present store where Potts pioneered in the erection of Harrisburg's first apartment house." (Evening News 1948). One of Potts bottles was found inside Eby fountain during removal with a note inside. 1893 to 1896: Maurice C. Eby Mayor of Harrisburg. 1893: Straw, 18, becomes a nude model. 1895: 11/23 - Eby Fountain at 3rd and Maclay St was erected by Fannie Eby as a memorial to her father Jacob Rupley Eby (native of Columbia, Lancaster - Father of Maurice). What was then the Northern boundary of Harrisburg (Evening News 1948). 1908: 6/22 - Mulberry and Derry St. Presented by Maurice C. Eby for the Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. 1909: Fountains at 3rd and Maclay and Market Square 1909: Milton Hershey commissions Italian Sculptor Giuseppe Donato . To create a fountain for the grounds of Hershey's estate. $2k down payment. Donato used Amanda Straw as the model. Hershey refuses fountain and Donato sues for $30k. Wins $23k. 1914: April 4th Maurice C. Eby died. 1914: Straw retired from modeling and married artist Albert Snyder. 1915: Nov 1st Harrisburg Daily Independent article - Miss Fanny M. Eby will present one to be placed in the water works plaza (next spring). Miss Fanny M. Eby presented to the city a fountain located at Third and Maclay streets several years ago. It has been in constant use. 1916: Oct 27 - Childrens Eby Memorial Fountain to be presented to the city next month. 1920: Statue placed at Reservoir Park Harrisburg. Straw visits fountain with friend and asked Straw if she could ever imagine posing nude. Straw said that she could not. 1922: May 30th article - Fountains: One in front of the court house (which had two or three predecessors) Lamberton Fountain The Eby fountain at Third and Maclay. The Royal fountain at Eighteenth and Walnut. The "Humane" fountain at Derry and Mulberry. Two fountains in Capitol Park that are more patronized by birds than humans. 1922: 7/13 - Police seeking robber who shoots victim. Victim was walking near the State St Bridge. Made his escape in the direction of Sunshine Park. Wounded man walked to Third and Walnut St and after telling his story to Patrolman William H. Gates, collapsed. (Telegraph 7/13/22). 1927: May 4th - Replace drinking fountain for animals at 3rd and Maclay destroyed by winter. 1930: Sunshine park vehicle accident "Herr Street Hill." 1935: 5/18 - Article showing wading pool near Herr St. (The Evening News) 1936: Feb 22nd 2022 Newspaper article indicated that the North St fountain was moved north of the pumping station after the 1936 flood. 1938: Dance of Eternal Youth moved to Municipal Rose Garden along N 3rd St. Dedicated on 9/15/38 1939: Straw moved back to Fishing Creek Valley after husbands death. 1948: 6/18 - Eby Fountain at 3rd and Maclay moved to Sunshine Park (12th and Forester St). 1952: Straw moved into Harrisburg Homeland Center. 1971: July Dance fountain moved to Italian Lake. 1972: 10/29 - Straw died #harrisburg #harrisburgpa #dauphincountyhistory #danceofeternalspring #miltonhershey #pennsylvaniahistory #harrisburghistory
