Who signed the Declaration of Indepedence for Georgia: Augusta’s Signers Monument

In the middle of a busy road in downtown Augusta stands one of Georgia’s most unusual historic landmarks: the Signers Monument, honoring the three Georgians who signed the Declaration of Independence. In this episode of Marked! A Journey Through Georgia’s Revolutionary Past, host Maiya May explores the lives and legacies of George Walton, Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnett, and how their influence helped Georgia gain independence and become the fourth state in the nation. What many people don’t realize is that two of those Founding Fathers, George Walton and Lyman Hall, are buried beneath the monument itself. Their crypts rest beneath the towering memorial in the center of Augusta. The third signer, Button Gwinnett, was also meant to be buried there, but his remains were never found. 00:00 The Georgians who signed the Declaration of Independence 01:00 The Signer's Monument 01:50 Meet Lyman Hall 03:56 Meet George Walton 05:25 Continental Congress 06:51 The Revolution in Georgia 08:00 Early life in Georgia 11:05 Influencing how the state took shape Subscribe for more episodes of Marked!
