Koguryo was in the north of the peninsula and conquered a large territory that occupied very extensive areas, even incorporating part of China and Russia, reaching its largest size in the 5th century, where it was considered one of the great empires of the East. In the southern part: there was the Kingdom of Silla to the east and Baekje to the west and the capital of Silla was the city of Gyeongju (경주), which still has the same name today. At the height of the Silla kingdom, Gyeongju became the fourth largest city in the world. On the other hand, this kingdom was militarily weak and came under a lot of pressure from Koguryo, BaekJe and its neighboring country Japan. Baekje, on the other hand, was culturally more similar to Koguryo, and its founder had been one of Koguryo's princes.
