Join us for a lively discussion between Hakham Melech Rahmiel Ben Ya’aqov and Tanach-only Jew Israel Horowitz as we discuss whether there is any Biblical evidence for the existence of a Sanhedrin in ancient (First Temple) Israel, and the implications this has for efforts to reinstate the Sanhedrin in modern times. Israel Horowitz was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family and eventually gained his ordination as an Orthodox Rabbi. Eventually, he left the Orthodox community, and rejected the "oral law" of the Rabbis. Israel has gained a large following as one of the up-and-coming teachers active in promoting the Tanach-only approach to understanding Torah. The World Alliance of Qara’im (WAQ) is an international organization of independent Karaites established in 2010, committed to steadfastly upholding the principles of Karaism. Unlike other Karaite groups which have, sadly, given themselves over to compromise with the Rabbanites (Rabbis), or engaged in a policy of pandering to the Christians, the WAQ has never – and will never – concede any of the basic tenets of Karaism. These include an unwavering adherence to the straightforward (but not literal!) meaning of the Torah; the rejection of false philosophies such as Pharisaic / Rabbinical Judaism, Christianity / Messianic Judaism, and Western subjective morality; and the belief that, while Hakhamim can be facilitators in helping others understand the Torah, they are not to play the role of dictator or “Pope”.
