A Glint in the Darkness: Taurus Model 58
The Taurus Model 58 is a new .380ACP from the famous Brazilian company. Well, almost new. The PT-58 was a precursor to the Model 58 that was catalogued in the US in the 80s and 90s before falling off the roster. But I have little doubt that the success that the Beretta Cheetah 80x had helped Taurus to bring the model 58 back, and even better. The most notable thing about the Model 58 is the gorgeous high luster of the polished frame and barrel juxtaposed with the matte alloy slide. The striking resemblance tot he Beretta model 92 is not surprising considering it's directed ancestry to the PT-92 when was made on tools and machines Beretta used to build a run of contract pistols for the government of Brazil. Downsizing from the 9mm to a 380acp was not a great task and seemed a natural movement while retaining the easy maintenance and reliability of it's parent PT-92. What Taurus didn't have to do is make this such a striking pistol. The shine of the polished frame and barrel gives the 58 a presentation grade quality that makes it a natural choice for a shadow box or other display case. The 58 is on the heavy side as it comes in at 35 ounces dry, the same as the PT-92. I don't see this as a every day carry for many people. But the aesthetics are undeniable. The new 58 would be right at home on the set of Miami Vice, and Hollywood armorers would be wise to take notice of the 58 when screen presence is needed. With a 15 round magazine the 58 hacks great capacity, there really are better choices for the everyday user like the Ruger LCP Max and the excellent and past reviewed Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 2.0. In the size and weight category of the model 58 there are many 9mm and even 45ACP options that would compare, like the Glock 19, Sig P320, Beretta APX, Canik MC9 and do it at a lighter weight. But non of those options are quite as thrilling to look at as this new model from Taurus Armas.
