Why the Nations Made Gods… But God Sent the Messiah | Image of God
What does it really mean that the Messiah is the “Image of God”? Is that just theological language, or is it confronting an entire ancient worldview? In the Ancient Near East, the nations believed their gods needed a body—a physical image crafted by human hands. Through rituals like mīs-pî and pīt-pî, these statues were not just symbols; they were “activated,” given life, and installed in temples as the living presence of a deity. But the Torah presents a completely different reality. No image. No ritual to make God present. No system where human hands can manufacture the divine. So now we have a tension. If Israel was commanded to reject images, why does the New Testament boldly declare that the Messiah is “the Image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15)? Is this a contradiction—or is it the answer to a question the nations had been asking all along? In this teaching, we walk through the ancient context behind idolatry, the deeper meaning of the Torah’s prohibition, and how the Messiah fulfills what no idol ever could. We explore what the terms eikōn and charaktēr meant in their original setting, and why the Messiah is not something made, activated, or installed—but revealed. The nations made gods… but God sent His Messiah. And once you see that contrast, you can’t read the Bible the same way again. If this teaching challenges the way you’ve understood Scripture, make sure to subscribe and stay connected. There’s a lot more to uncover when we read the Bible in its original context.
