He was born as Christopher John Davison in Argentina to a British diplomat (father) and an Irish secretary (mother). He took his mother's maiden name 'De Burgh' for his stage name when he started performing. Chris spent his childhood all around the world in countries like Zaire, Malta and Nigeria because of his father's diplomatic and engineering work. The family finally settled in Ireland in a twelvth century castle which his father turned into a hotel. Chris sang for the guests there. He signed his first record deal in 1974 and released his debut album 'Far Beyond These Castle Walls' that same year. His first albums did not have commercial success, including his next album 'Spanish Train And Other Stories' which included a song named 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' which was released as a single and topped the Irish single charts. His first album to chart in the UK was a collection of old songs called 'Best Moves' which was released in 1981. The album also peaked at #5 in Germany, a country that Chris De Burgh had success throughout his career. His next album 'The Getaway' peaked at #1 in Germany and reached the Top 30 in the UK album charts. It has been certified platinum in Germany. With the single 'Don't Pay The Ferryman' De Burgh also charted in the US Billboard Single Charts and peaked at #34 as did the album at #43. The next album 'Man On The Line' again topped the German album charts, peaked at #11 in the UK and #18 in Australia. The single 'High On Emotion' peaked at #12 in the German Single Charts and #44 in the UK and the USA. The next album 'Into The Light', released in 1986, contained an even bigger hit: 'Lady In Red' became Chris De Burgh's biggest chart success, reaching the #1 in the UK and Canada, #2 in Australia, #3 in the USA and #5 in Germany. The album peaked at #2 in the UK and Germany, #14 in Australia and #25 in the USA. The next album 'Flying Colours' became his first #1 album in the UK and also topped the German album charts. So did the first album in the 90s called 'Power Of Ten' which also peaked at #2 in the UK album charts.
