HP 3488A - Switch/Control Unit
Workshop Project # - HP3488A Since quite a few "legacy" devices I aquired came with GPIB (or older ones with HPIB) I set out to find a few useful tools aorund that system. Note that the industry still uses GPIB based devices, and so, most of what would be "cool" is also quite on the expensive side. I was quite happy when I found this switch/control unit for relatively cheap. Honestly, it was below 100€ including several modules. Imagine my surprise, when I wanted to start stocking up on modules too! Not a single one I initially found was below 100€... it took quite a bit of time and repeated searching to find the pile I have now. Still, I think over a few years and less than 1000€ is a good turnout. Though I still need the connector blocks for a few of the cards. There was an issue with one of the plug in cards that took a bit of mental effort to fix, and one issue that took finding the right replacement part. But overall, I'm happy how this one turned out. 0:00 - Intro / Welcome 2:33 - Disassembly and Overview: Case, Front Panel, Controller 4:40 - Disassembly: Frame, PSU, Transformer, Backbplane 5:55 - Heat Staked Front Panel / Cleanup! 7:48 - Power Switch: Disassembly, Clean, Assembly 10:40 - Voltage Selection Switch: Disassembly, Clean, Assembly 12:07 - Mains Line Filter Replacement / Power Connection Resoldering 14:33 - Recapping?
