A prophet died at a birthday banquet. But history offers two conflicting accounts of who killed him. One, from the Bible, says the murder was caused by a woman's resentment and a dance; the other, from the first-century Jewish historian Josephus, says the real cause of death was a cold, calculating political scheme. The same death, two versions, two motives. Who is telling the truth? In this episode, we return to Mark 6:14-29, placing the biblical account and Josephus's account in Book XVIII of Ancient Jewish History side by side for a point-by-point comparison. We will unravel four mysteries together: First, the two death reports. Mark says that Herodias, harboring resentment, used his daughter's dance and Herod's public oath to kill John. Josephus, however, says that Herod acted out of political fear: he feared John's growing influence among the people would incite rebellion, so he preemptively executed him at the fortress of Machareus on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. One report concerns a crime of passion, the other a political assassination. We will examine whether these two reports contradict each other or can coexist. Second, a name questioned for two thousand years. Mark 6:17 states that Herodias was originally the wife of Philip, Herod's brother. However, Josephus's account seems to point to someone else: Herodias's former husband was Herod, and the fiefdom of Philip was married to Herodias's daughter. Did Mark really misspell the name? We will examine the critics' accusations and how scholars like R.T. France respond (hint: Herod's family was rife with duplicate names; this former husband may very well have actually been named Herod Philip). Third, a girl you think you know. The dancing girl, known worldwide as Salome. But you may not have noticed: the Bible never mentions her name. The name "Salome" only appears in Josephus's account, not in the Gospels. Fourth, and most crucially: why did Mark say this? This is the only narrative in the entire Gospel of Mark where Jesus is completely absent, yet Mark cleverly inserts it between the dispatch of the twelve disciples (Mark 6:7-13) and their return (Mark 6:30), creating a classic "Mark sandwich." It's more than just a court scandal. John's death, with his body recovered and buried by the disciples, is a foreshadowing Mark has placed right in the center of the Gospel. It foreshadows the cross. Don't rush off. The most poignant part of this passage is actually Herod himself. He revered John, protected him, and even enjoyed listening to John preach, sometimes becoming increasingly agitated yet unable to resist approaching. Yet, he still gave that command. What crushed him wasn't hatred, but a vow made in public and the gazes of the assembled guests. This resonates with us more than we're willing to admit.
