Amderma is a village on the coast of the Kara Sea in the Zapolyarny region of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The nearest city (Vorkuta) is 270 km away, Naryan-Mar is 420 km away. The polar day lasts in Amderma from May 20 to July 30, the polar night - from November 27 to January 16. The settlement was founded in connection with the start of construction of a mine for the extraction of fluorspar (fluorite) in July 1933. From August 28, 1956, the 72nd Aviation Regiment was based at the airfield located near the village, performing air defense tasks, which was organizationally part of the 4th Air Defense Division of the 10th Arkhangelsk Separate Air Defense Army. In connection with the change in the country's military doctrine, the garrison was withdrawn from Amderma in 1993-1994; in 1995 the complex permafrost laboratory was liquidated; in 1966 - oil and gas exploration expedition; in 1998 the Torgmortrans office was closed; in 2000 - SMU "Amdermastroy"; in 2002 - the Amderma Territorial Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Control became part of the Northern Territorial Department of the Hydrometeorological Service as the OGMS Amderma Arkhangelsk TsGMS-R, with a minimum number of employees.
