OTRN Ep. 22 —World Listening Day | The Whistler's "Meet Mr. Death" (1945)

There's a moment in tonight's classic broadcast where a man overhears something he was never meant to hear — and it changes everything. Old time radio ran on that idea more than you'd think: someone listening in the dark, catching what wasn't meant for them. It's World Listening Day this weekend, so we're leaning into it — a quiet evening in the Okanagan, the radio on low, and a mystery that turns entirely on who's paying attention. Tonight's broadcast: The Whistler — "Meet Mr. Death" (originally aired April 23, 1945) Our opening segment features an original AI-voiced character created for OTRN, inspired by the tone of 1940s radio mystery anthologies. This is an original creative work and is not affiliated with the original production or performers. FREE RECIPE — Nuts & Bolts Norma's note: This one never had proper amounts, and it still doesn't. You use what cereal's in the cupboard and however much of it looks right — Cheerios, Rice Chex, Shreddies, whatever's on hand. Everybody who's made this since has their own version, and that's exactly as it should be. Ingredients: • Cheerios, Rice Chex, and Shreddies (no set amount — use what looks right) • 2 cups pretzel sticks • 2 cups peanuts • 3/4 cup pecans • 1 tsp marjoram • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 tsp smoked salt • 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 1/2 tsp onion powder • 1/8 tsp cayenne • 3/4 lb butter Instructions: In a very large bowl, combine your cereals with the pretzel sticks, peanuts, and pecans. In a saucepan, melt the butter and stir in the Worcestershire sauce, marjoram, smoked salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne. Pour the butter mixture over the dry ingredients and toss thoroughly, until every piece is coated. Spread onto baking sheets in a single layer and bake at 250°F for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally so nothing catches on the edges. Keeps for weeks, so the story goes. Ours never lasted past Sunday. Want the rest? The Listener Bundle has two more from Norma's personal collection — Date Squares (Matrimonial Cake) and Hot Spiced Cider. $5 CAD, instant PDF download. 🛒 Etsy: https://normaskitchen.etsy.com 🛒 Payhip: https://payhip.com/OTRNCookbookShop The view through our window tonight is courtesy of our great-grandson, Max Moyer — a young man from Langley, BC who has a way of finding the quiet parts of this world and simply paying attention to them. 📷 https://maxmoyer.ca/ 📷 Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/maxmoyer/ 🖼️ Redbubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/Max-... 📸 Instagram:   / maxmoyerphotography   Subscribe for more Old Time Radio News:    / @otrn1940s
