In today’s NBA a split second or a step in the wrong direction can be the difference between a bad shot and an uncontested layup, between winning and losing. The ability to identify which match-ups and lineups provide the best chance of victory, the exponential growth in three-point attempts, and the quantification of defensive impact are all outgrowths of analytics’ mainstreaming. What comes next for basketball analytics and how are teams trying to gain an edge in the face of widespread adoption of analytics? What does it take to build a data-driven organization at all levels?
