In the 90s, many believed that vinyl records have had their day. Today they are making an unexpected comeback. We follow three important stages of vinyl record production: First, the sound data is scratched into an aluminum disc coated with lacquer. The cut is performed by Moritz Illner from the company Duophonic in Augsburg. Björn Bieber in Pforzheim is responsible for the next step: he produces a nickel impression from the cut disk in an electroplating process: the metal stamper for pressing. Moritz Illlner needs two of these to press a record. One stamper for side A, the other for side B. During pressing, the two plates are clamped into the machine, which is over 50 years old. They then heat the vinyl pellets into a mushy cake. This is then placed between the two press matrices. The machine presses the plates together with 200 tons of force, and out comes the record. But the devil is in the detail, and errors can creep in anywhere.
