Étienne Robial - Canal+ (2/4) : La charte visuelle et sonore
Étienne Robial, Donation of the Complete Process of Creating the Canal+ Visual Identity, 1984-2009 Canal+, Part 1: Building the Channel's Identity Canal+, Part 2: The Visual and Sound Charter Canal+, Part 3: The Transition to Digital Canal+, Part 4: International Development In 2010, Étienne Robial donated his entire body of work creating the visual identity for Canal+ to the National Center for Visual Arts (CNAP). This exceptional collection, comprising more than 10,000 documents, testifies to the exemplary art direction work carried out by Étienne Robial for Canal+ between 1984 and 2009 to design the first "on-air look" for a television channel, a term he himself coined. From program opening sequences to the channel's visual identity, including communication materials, stationery, publications, and graphic guidelines for the numerous countries where the channel operates, from the signage in the building housing the offices and studios to the sets and vehicles, everything was conceived and designed under the direction of Étienne Robial. The collection held at the Cnap (National Center for Visual Arts) also includes all the sketches, master drawings, collages of program titles, and mock-ups that bear witness to the creative process of the time. It also reveals the scope and variety of the typographic composition work specific to each program. Typography, colors, and shapes are the tools of a striking visual system, whose apparent simplicity is anything but accidental. Everything is meticulously planned and executed with obsessive rigor and precision. Canal+'s visual identity is both a creative, inventive, and original work, yet it is part of a highly structured and rigorous framework in which everything is precisely defined and constructed. Robial appears as an ingenious architect or an artist/engineer; he is clearly the inventor of a system deeply rooted in the collective imagination and the history of graphic design.
