Understanding the Quran with Ismail Yaşar SURAH AL-BAQARAH Interpretation and Commentary -Surah Al-Baqarah Verse: 89-93 -Broken Meaning Lesson: 22 -Page: 13 Meaning of the Noble Quran: 89 When a great book came to them from Allah, confirming what they had with them (the Torah), when it came to them (the Jews), they disbelieved in it (out of fear of losing their leadership, and out of jealousy and defiance). Yet, before this (before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent), they were demanding victory (for the sake of him and the Holy Quran he will bring) against those disbelievers. Now Allah's curse is falling heavily upon those disbelievers. 90 Because of their excessive desire (which they were unjustly seized with due to their conditioned belief that the Prophet of the End Times would be sent among them), and because of their resentment that Allah would send down His grace upon whomever He chooses of His servants (Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)), their rejection of what Allah has revealed is evil, for which they sold their souls! Thus, they were not only deprived of their hopes for profit, but also incurred great wrath (for denying Jesus, peace be upon him) upon which they were struck (and thus incurred a double wrath from Allah). And so, for those disbelievers, there is a great and humiliating punishment. 91 When it is said to those (Jews), "Believe in all that Allah has sent down," they say, "We believe in what has been sent down to us," and they deny what is beyond it. Yet, it (the Holy Quran) is the truth, confirming what is with them (the Torah). (My Beloved!) Say, “So why did you kill Allah’s prophets before this (before Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent)? If you were believers (in your own book, the Torah) (would you have done so)?” 92 And indeed, Moses had certainly brought you the clear proofs (and the nine miracles), and then you took the calf (as a god) after him (his going to Mount Tur), and yet you were wrongdoers (to yourselves by violating Allah’s commands). 93 And when We raised the Mount of Mount above you (in order to ensure that you accept its commands, because you caused difficulty when Moses brought the Torah), We took your covenant: “Take what We have given you with diligence and heedfulness, and listen!” But they said: “We have heard (His word) and we have disobeyed!” Because, because of their disbelief (in the belief that God is a body), the calf was placed in their hearts (like a delicious drink) and given to them to drink. (My Beloved!) Say, "How evil is that which your faith commands you to do! If you were believers in your own book, as in your statement, "We only believe in what has been sent down to us!" (Would you worship the calf?
