Salvaging Bluebird K7. Never before seen footage of the underwater salvage
In 1967, Donald Campbell was killed when he crashed his jet hydroplane, Bluebird in another pursuit of the World Water Speed Record, which he held an unprecedented seven times. 34 years later the Bluebird Project dive team located the wreck 40m deep on the bed of Coniston Water and in a daring and risky salvage operation they recovered the wreck. Here, using previously unseen underwater footage shot by divers and ROVs, the inside story of the salvage operation is told from the perspective of the salvage divers. The black and white stills used were taken by @stevenrotherymarillion, founder member and lead guitarist with @marillionofficial . Their track, Out of This World from the album Afraid of Sunlight was the inspiration behind the search for Bluebird and both Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth were there to see the chaos they set in motion. From the moment of discovery to the wreck being brought ashore, the whole story is here. Several legends and myths have grown up around this story, some of them unpleasant, misleading or simply derogatory. Here also is set out the reason why the boat was lifted, how it was handled emotionally and professionally by the divers and how it became a respectful celebration of Donald Campbell and his endeavours. #BluebirdK7, #DonaldCampbell, #BluebirdProject, #Engineering, #Safety, #MarineEngineering, #JetBoat, #lakedistrict #lakedistrictnationalpark #salvage #shipwreckdiscovery http://www.Bluebirdproject.info
