Leonard Freed - Photographs.

Leonard Freed (1929–2006) was an American documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and originally trained as a painter before turning to photography in the early 1950s. He lived and worked in Europe for much of his early career, producing extensive photographic series on Jewish communities and post-war European society. In the 1960s, Freed focused on major social and political issues, including the American Civil Rights Movement, which culminated in his book Black in White America (1968). He also produced significant work on the New York Police Department in the 1970s, published as Police Work (1980), and on the Arab–Israeli conflict, published in Israel: A Diary of a Country (1978). His projects often took the form of long-term documentary series, later exhibited internationally and published in book form. Freed joined Magnum Photos in 1972 and worked on assignments around the world while continuing independent projects. His photographs were published widely in international magazines and newspapers. Over his career, he produced more than a dozen books and his work is held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
