Sergeants McDougall and Kasinski receive orders to enter the small French village, inspect house by house to ensure no Germans remain behind, and secure the small bridge located in the town. According to the latest reconnaissance, there are no enemy forces present, but if they encounter any, it will be minimal and they must eliminate them, and wait for the main battalion, which is 24 hours behind the sergeants' advance party. The sergeants choose two trusted soldiers to accompany them: Private Smith and Private First Class Scott. The non-commissioned officers equip themselves with light gear; one arms himself with an M1 Garand rifle, and the other still has the M1 carbine he landed with in Africa. A few grenades complete the equipment for what is expected to be a routine mission. However, no sooner do they enter the village than the four American soldiers stumble upon a German patrol conducting a reconnaissance mission. Outnumbered three to one, our heroes rush toward the bridge, entering a crossroads where they eliminate three German soldiers. The enemy reconnaissance patrol is hot on their heels, and Sergeant Kasinski decides to abandon the village and head into the bocage. The map he's reading seems to show a direct route to the bridge... What our protagonists don't know is that Oberleutnant Schumacher is commanding a heavy machine gun crew in a position reinforced with sandbags and hidden from the eyes of the American infantry. Greeted by Hitler's Reaper, the GIs were forced to seek cover, unable to reach the hedgerows. This gave the pursuing patrol time to close the trap. In seconds, Private Smith was hit in the back and fell dead instantly. Sergeant McDougall was riddled with Spandau fire, suffering two serious wounds and being left incapacitated and near death. Sergeant Kasinski thought he spotted an opening in the bocage and charged forward, grenade in hand, only to discover that the position had been reinforced by six more German soldiers. He threw the grenade, which exploded near some Hitlerjungen, and at that precise moment, Schumacher emptied his MP40's magazine into the NCO's legs. With one soldier dead and two seriously wounded, the Americans surrendered and were captured by the Nazis, who left the area after dynamiting the bridge.
