First performed in Vienna on May 7, 1824, it has been described as "The greatest symphony ever written", and "The most important work in Western Music" among other things. All praise aside it is one of the most enduring pieces in the entire repertoire of great music. The story of the premiere is just as interesting, with the then stone deaf Beethoven standing on the stage following the score during the performance. In the Second movement the reaction to the tympany in the beginning drew such applause from the Viennese audience, that Beethoven had to be turned around to see the enthusiastic response to it. The Van Karajan recording with the Philharmonia is considered by many to be his finest recording of a work he is well known for as a conductor. It is presented here in a new mix created especially for this channel to mark the 200th Anniversary of this glorious work.
