Jacob is 42 years old and from Barcelona. He is married with eight children. He is expecting his ninth child this year. He was born into a Christian family, the second of nine siblings. His parents belong to the Neocatechumenal Way and began living their faith in this community. He was born into this family of such faith. They instilled the value of faith in him from a young age. He had a relationship with God like that of a child. “From a young age, I was taught that God was good and my father. I had a significant struggle because I lived quite alone, surrounded by girls. I didn't have a brother to play with. Although it may seem silly, it had an impact on me,” he says. His father worked, and he admits he was quite demanding. Being from a large family, they didn't enjoy many comforts. These things somehow left their mark on him, and he felt that this God had been unfair to him in some way. Then he began a period of thinking about himself and seeking his own justice. “I experienced it in a very internalized way; I suffered a bit in solitude. The Lord was patient with me.” At school, they knew he came from a Catholic family, and many of his classmates made comments Jacob didn't like. “When they messed with the Church, I didn't defend it. At that time, belonging to the Church wasn't positive.” In this way of being, he led various lifestyles; he acted one way at school and another at home. He lived a similar life. When he reached the age of 14, his parents invited him to catechism classes for initiation into the Neocatechumenal Way. At first, he attended the parish with the idea of ​​escaping the school environment but with no intention of going further in his faith. “This inertia of going somehow saved me from those adolescent years and the friendships of those years,” he acknowledges. Thanks to the support of this community, he was able to find emotional support during these years, which are always more complex for a young person. “I lived those years fighting against everything, against myself. Furthermore, my relationship with my father wasn't helpful.” He began to walk in faith and observed his parents' example of choosing a path in difficult situations. Jacob wanted to do the Lord's will, remembering his parents' moments of suffering and how they dealt with them. “There was a voice telling me that this was the truth. After a pilgrimage we made to Israel, I started to like a girl from the parish. We started dating.” This relationship greatly helped him understand himself. “I had become a God to myself. And everything around me had to be the way I wanted it. It's difficult because not everything always goes the way you want it. My girlfriend wasn't the way I wanted it either. In this community, I realized that I wasn't God, but a poor, arrogant, and proud sinner.” I was a person who was constantly judging others.
