Cartesian Coordinate System Explained | Kinematics Class 9 Physics (FBISE & KPK)
A Cartesian coordinate system is a system which is used to show the direction of a vector or the position of a point in plane or space. This system is also called a rectangular coordinate system. A Cartesian coordinate system consists of two lines which intersect each other at an angle of 90 degrees. A Cartesian coordinate system has two types 1. 2D Cartesian coordinate system 2. 3D Cartesian coordinate system Cartesian Coordinate System (Rectangular Coordinate System) The Cartesian coordinate system, also known as the rectangular coordinate system, is a fundamental method used in physics and mathematics to locate the position of points on a plane. It was developed by the famous mathematician René Descartes, and it provides a simple and accurate way to describe positions using numbers. In this system, we use two perpendicular number lines called axes. The horizontal line is known as the X-axis, and the vertical line is called the Y-axis. These two axes intersect each other at a point called the origin, represented by the letter O. The origin has coordinates (0, 0), which means zero on both axes. The Cartesian coordinate system divides the plane into four parts called quadrants. These quadrants are formed due to the intersection of the X-axis and Y-axis at right angles (90°). The quadrants are numbered in an anticlockwise direction starting from the top right: First Quadrant (I): Both x and y are positive (+, +) Second Quadrant (II): x is negative and y is positive (-, +) Third Quadrant (III): Both x and y are negative (-, -) Fourth Quadrant (IV): x is positive and y is negative (+, -) Any point on the plane is represented by an ordered pair (x, y). The first number represents the distance along the X-axis, and the second number represents the distance along the Y-axis. For example, the point (3, 2) means moving 3 units to the right on the X-axis and 2 units upward on the Y-axis. This system is very important in physics because it helps in describing the position and motion of objects. For example, when studying displacement or velocity in two dimensions, we often use the Cartesian coordinate system to break quantities into components along X and Y directions. It is also widely used in graphing equations, plotting motion graphs, and analyzing forces. Another important feature of this system is that it allows us to represent vectors easily. A vector can be shown as an arrow starting from the origin or any point, where its direction and length represent magnitude and direction respectively. This makes it very useful in mechanics and geometry. In daily life, Cartesian coordinates are used in GPS systems, maps, computer graphics, and engineering designs. Without this system, it would be very difficult to accurately describe locations and movements in a plane. In conclusion, the Cartesian or rectangular coordinate system is a powerful tool that helps us locate points, represent physical quantities, and analyze motion in a clear and systematic way. It is one of the most important concepts in Class 9 physics and forms the basis for advanced studies in science and mathematics.
