Max used to listen to our podcasts and dream of building a business where he didn’t have to do all the work himself. Here's what he told us on our most recent podcast: "When I was listening to all these podcasts, I thought I'd still be on the ladder, climbing all 40 feet, painting every stroke myself, and hoping that one day I might find a couple good painters to at least not have to do that." Painting every house himself. Doing all the marketing. Doing all the sales. Wondering if he'd ever find a way out. Sound familiar? If you've been in this business for a while, there's a good chance you've had that exact thought. You climb the ladder. You knock out the day. You come home tired. You wake up and do it again. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you're wondering if it's ever going to look different. Max had a baby on the way last April. And that's when something clicked. He couldn't keep running a business that ran him. He needed to build something real — something that would give his family the life he actually wanted, and give him the time freedom to enjoy it. So he joined the PBP Coaching Program, and got to work. The result? In 2024, Max did $127K in revenue. Painted most of it himself. In 2025 (April through October), he did $403K - at 25% net margins. He's now five weeks ahead of his sales plan, tracking for $1.1M in 2026. He just hired his first project manager. And he's building toward a $5M company in five years. Max isn't all the way off the brush yet. But he's on the road to getting off the brush, and that's the entire point. He recently shared his story on the latest Painting Business Pro Podcast. Here's some of what he talked about: The exact moment Max realized he couldn't keep painting every house himself The wake-up call that hit Max when his baby was on the way - and why it changed everything How Max went from $127K to $403K in a single year (no new market, no extra hours) The "fear of staying the same has to hurt more than the fear of change" moment that pushed him all in Why "I just check my bank account each week" is the most expensive way to run a painting business The simple weekly habit Max picked up that finally let him manage his business instead of being run by it The "not doing now" list every overwhelmed painter needs (and how it kills the 60-hour week) Why Max runs his own Facebook ads - and why two different agencies couldn't beat him at it The pricing and sub mistake costing Max margin in 2025 (and the simple fix that would push him to 30%+) The question Max asked his first PM candidate that separated the "yes" from the "maybe" The Facebook ad that brought Max his future head of production - and how he almost ignored the response The thing I said to Max on our first call that pushed him from "half-hearted business" to all in If you're tired of climbing ladders, tired of painting every house yourself, and you're starting to wonder if there's a real way out - this episode will hit close to home. #businessstrategy #contractorsuccess #businesstips ‪@EricBarstowCo‬
