Celebrating 446 Years at Holy Cross Church, Kurla West - Mumbai | Parish Feast 03-05-2026
The Holy Cross Church of Kurla West Mumbai had celebrated its annual feast day on the evening of 3rd May 2026. The environment was humid Mumbai breeze and it was heavy with history, devotion and the joyful spirit of the East Indian Community. The Holy Cross Church of Kurla West had stood since 1580 and have celebrated 446 years, making its place as once of the most ancient and revered landmarks in India. The Holy Cross Church became the heart of celebration for four centuries of faith with vibrant energy. As the sun began its descent at 5:00 pm the Village Cross (at Pillai chowk) became the start of the celebration. The festivities started with the community gathered for prayers at the Village cross (at Pillai chowk). This was the moment of spiritual reflection served as the reminder of the church’s endurance through the ages. The villagers have seen the changing tides of Mumbai’s history yet the core of their devotion remains as steadfast of the 16th century till date. As the prayers were ended and this gave way to the rhythmic pulse of the East Indian Traditional band. The brass instruments and the drums erupted the in a melody that is the cultural identity of the Mumbai region’s original inhabitants. This was the call to celebrate to all the Kurla Villagers, both young and old to renew vitality to the ancient traditions. The centerpiece of the evening was the annual feast day procession a spectacle of creativity and community pride. Each village community had poured their heart into decorating floats that carried message of “Peace and Hope”. The floats were masterpieces of local craftsmanship, adorned with symbolic artistry that turned the village narrow lanes into a moving gallery. Some of the village ladies had dressed in traditional East Indian Lugra which added the visual splendour. The procession was a nostalgic nod to Mumbai’s past with the presence of numerous Tanga (horse drawn carts). These Tangas are rarely seen in the modern city and were beautifully decorated for this occasion. Families and excited children were perched upon them, their laughter mingling with the clip-clop of hooves on the pavement. The Tangas added a regal, old world charm to the event making the 446th anniversary feel like a journey back in time. The East Indian band performed their traditional ceremonies, the youngsters inspired by the rhythm and joined in the traditional East Indian dance, their movements added joy and a cultural pride. The procession moved in intricate village lanes and eventually flowed towards the grand entrance of the Holy Cross Church. By the time the procession reached the church gates, the event was breath-taking fusion of religious fervour and cultural celebration. The 2026 Holy Cross Church feast was not just a local event but it was a testament to the resilience of the East Indian Community and a vibrant reminder that even a city of millions, the heart of a Kurla village can still beat with the strength of 446 years of history. We would like to extend our deepest thanks to Parish Priest and the entire clergy for their spiritual guidance, we would also like to thank the nuns for their constant prayers. We would like to thank the East Indian community of Kurla, the traditional East Indian band groups. We would like to give special thank to the village communities who had designed the magnificent floats with much needed message for our times. Finally, to all parishioners of Holy Cross Church thank you for coming together as one family. May the Holy Cross continue to bless our homes, our families and our historical village for many more years to come. ---------------------------------------------------------- Hi Friends, Thanks for watching.
